Situational Awareness Photo

Situational awareness, in the most basic definition, is being aware of your surroundings and the activities going on around you. With more and more distractions in our everyday lives, it is important to have situational awareness. Whether you are driving down the road, at work, on vacation, or even at the mall you need to be aware of what is happening around you. This will allow you to take the necessary actions to avoid potential dangers. Not every situation can be prevented.

Patch and Badge

The Miami Springs Police Department is looking for qualified men and women to become part of our law enforcement family.  We take pride in the fact that we are a community-oriented department that works closely with our residents.

Police applicants must be Florida Certified Police Officers or close to obtaining a Florida Certification.  We are currently hiring police officers as well as accepting interest cards for future police officers and public service aide positions.

On line Threats

The Florida Department of  Juvenile Justice has developed the attached resource guide to educate, encourage and support parents and guardians of school age children. The It's No Joke campaign is aimed at reducing school threats made by students in Florida.

Sit down with your children and discuss with them the severity of making on-line threats even if it's just a joke. The law has changed and posting threats, even if it's in jest, may result in an arrest.

FortifyFL

FortifyFL is a suspicious activity reporting tool that allows you to instantly relay information to appropriate law enforcement agencies and school officials. The app was created and funded by the 2018 Florida Legislature as part of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act. The Florida Office of  the Attorney General, Florida Department of Education, and Florida Department of Law Enforcement coordinated the development and roll-out.

Don't!  Someone could be following you in a crime  known as "Bank Jugging".  While we're not sure how it got the name, we can tell you how it works.

WHAT IS IT?

- The term is used to describe suspects who sit in bank parking lots and watch customers go in and out of a bank. The suspects follow the customers they believe are in possession of cash and look for an opportunity to burglarize their vehicles or rob them directly.

- “Juggers” most frequently target customers carrying bank bags, bank envelopes and coin boxes.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR:

No Texting While Driving

The bill signed by Governor DeSantis made texting while driving a primary offense, thereby allowing law enforcement officers to pull motorists over and issue a citation solely for texting (including messaging, emailing, and other forms of typing on a mobile device) behind the wheel.  That means officers may now stop you solely on suspicion of texting while driving.

Stop Crime

Always remember to lock your residence, set your house alarm, remove valuables from your vehicle, and make sure the doors are locked.

If leaving on vacation only tell trusted family or friends, don’t advertise it on social media, have your house lights on a timer, leave a radio on, stop your mail and newspaper delivery, leave a car in the driveway, have a neighbor check on your home and fill out a vacant house form with the police department.

Security for Houses of Worship

Does your house of worship have an emergency plan should the unthinkable happen? Plans should be made in advance of a potential incident to help mitigate the risk to those that work, visit and worship there should an event occur. The Department of Homeland Security has provide the attached documents to help places of worship develop a plan to help secure their facilities.

Lock It Up

Don't be a victim! YOU are the person most capable of preventing vehicle and residential burglaries.

Keys to protect you and your property:

*Lock your doors at ALL times - THIS INCLUDES YOUR VEHICLES!

*Park your car in a well-lit area of your property. Use lighting and landscaping to make your home's surroundings unattractive to burglars, vandals, and other criminals.

*DO NOT leave valuables in your car. If you must, leave them out of sight or locked in the trunk or glove compartment.

Golf Cart

Low Speed Vehicles are Allowed on City Streets

~Golf Carts are NOT Allowed on City Streets~

Although they may look the same, your low speed vehicle must have a registered license plate in order to drive around city streets.

(22) GOLF CART means a motor vehicle that is designed and manufactured for operation on a golf course for sporting or recreational purposes and that is not capable of exceeding speeds of 20 miles per hour.

The Miami Springs Police Department urges all residents to call if they see any suspicious activity.  We understand that sometimes people are reluctant to call the police because they aren't sure what suspicious activity looks like.  Here are some examples:

Pole Mounted ALPR

The City of Miami Springs Police Department uses automated license plate recognition systems. One is stationary on the incoming bridge where Canal Street meets Curtiss Parkway.  A mobile A.L.P.R. has already been in operation since 2016.

These devices give law enforcement agencies information on the various vehicles that the cameras pick up, for the purpose to help recover stolen cars and stolen plates, and also to capture wanted and recover missing persons.
